Prancing Nigger (1925) is probably Firbank's most widely known book, and was particularly successful in America. Many people consider it the best of the novels, and even if one prefers Valmouth or Vainglory, one is bound to admit that Prancing Nigger is, technically, one of his finest achievements. One reason for its popularity, perhaps, is that it has (though Firbank would have winced at such a humourless suggestion) what might be interpreted as a 'serious' sociological theme: racial discrimination. More About Prancing Nigger

This book is almost impossible to review, starting with a title which is both weird and offensive. The story is more linear that "The Flower Beneath the Foot" and the dialogue is on occasion amusing. There also seems to be more sympathy for the Mouth family in this book than for the upper class whites in "Flower" who are ridiculed mercilessly.... Sorrow in Sunlight [alternatively entitled 'Prancing Nigger'] (1925)Author: Ronald Firbank* A Project Gutenberg of Australia eBook * http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks07/0700...The title is your first clue. This book is totally politically incorrect. Set in some unnamed very warm Colonial country, every one, European and native is described... Well it isn't as badly written as Valmouth or Cardinal Pirelli, and there's not so much nasty sniggering. But it's a painfully thin piece of trivia, and the -dialect-? -accent?- language?- is difficult to take in 2013. I really fail to see why Firbank's work has survived at all.

The Road To Wigan Pier

Although George Orwell grew up in the relative comfort of the English middle class, his socialist convictions and general sense of fairness led him to hate his country's deeply ingrained class structure. That perspective permeates this book, but the most striking elements are the quotidian details of life that Orwell...
